Two lanes of Broadway in downtown Nashville will be closed for some time as
crews investigate a partial roof collapse.

Workers with PSG Construction were renovating a vacant building on the 300 block of Broadway at about 4
p.m. A wooden beam hit a wall that sent bricks flying into an alleyway, according to officials with the
Nashville Fire Department.

Some debris smashed into a window at Savannah's Candy Kitchen next door.
"It was loud," said Mikayla VanHoutan, a witness. "It just sounded like a bunch of bricks and wood falling."
VanHoutan was across the street at the time of the collapse.

"There were people screaming and running away from the building," she said. "I saw one woman wiping
dust from her eye, people running everywhere. Crowds just swarmed."

No one was injured, but firefighters said they have concerns.

"We're very concerned because we have lots of residents who frequent downtown, and we have a large
convention in the early stages, so we'll err on the side of caution and safety ," Fire Commander Charles
Shannon said.

A spokesperson for PSG Construction said the structure is at least 100 years old. He said the company
will pay for the damage caused to the Candy Kitchen.

Engineers must inspect the building before workers can go back inside.

"People want to see and we understand that, but for safety, we have to keep it back some distance,"
Shannon said.

People stopped to stare at the scene for hours, creating more congestion in an already busy part of town.
"I've been here 22 years and that's the first time it's every happened," said Chuck Barrel, an Elvis Presley
impersonator. "And I hope it's the last."

Police said the road will stay closed until they can get the wall supported. Even after the road reopens, the
sidewalk may remain closed for some time.

Allen roofing companies in TX must be care how they investigate old buildings.
